What is the attitude of Ukrainians to the blockade of the Donbas, to propaganda, and the Russian aggression

The National Democratic Institute of International Affairs (NDI) in Ukraine conducted a socio-political survey at the end of 2017.  7.2 thousand respondents were asked various questions starting from the number of social pages visited by them a day to their attitude to the disintegration of the USSR.The following are the results of the survey which are, this or that way, connected with the eastern part of the country.

Trade blockade and Ukrainians

On average, from 8% to 18% of Ukrainians from different regions of Ukraine think that the trade blockade of the uncontrolled areas of the Donbas is a big threat. From 19% to 31% of people are less categorical, but think that the blockade is a threat. The majority of people (53% in the west and 47% in the centre) do not think that the blockade is a threat.

In terms of the whole country, people's opinions are approximately equal – 40% “for” and 40% “against” the blockade. In the south and in the east of the country there are less people who support the blockade – 27% and 33% respectfully, in the north of the country and in the centre – 45%. The most radical is the west of Ukraine – 64%.

Russian propaganda and Ukrainians

Citizens of Ukraine are more afraid of Russian propaganda and think that it is a threat.

The survey shows that at the national level 33% of respondents consider Russian propaganda a threat. 33% think that it is a threat, but not so critical. 25% see no threat in Russian propaganda.

The majority of respondents who do not want to get under the influence of Russian propaganda are in the west of Ukraine (43%). In the east the number is 30%.

More than a half of respondents (58%) over the entire country agree with the statement that Russian propaganda is spread in Ukraine. The smallest number of people who agree with the statement is in the east of the country (47%), a bit more – 51% in the south, in the centre and in the north – 58%. The greatest number of people who think that Russian propaganda is spread in Ukraine is in the west – 72%.

Ukrainians and the Russian aggression

Residents of Kramatorsk and Slovyansk (the Donetsk region) are more likely not to see any threat in the Russian military aggression. For example, 36% of respondents from Slovyansk and Kramatorsk think that the Russian military aggression is not a threat. The opposite opinion is expressed by 30% of the residents of these towns. 27% cannot answer the question.

At the national level, the survey showed that 80% of people think the Russian aggression is a threat. 16% think that it is not.

Kramatorsk and Slovyansk, which are marked as the Kramatorsk region in the infographics, were under the control of illegal military formations of “DPR” in the spring and summer 2014. At that time the cities experienced active war in the Donetsk region.

In the south (67%) and in the east (66%) of Ukraine, people are less categorical with respect to the threat of the Russian aggression as compared to other regions of Ukraine. In the west the figure is higher – 85%, and in the centre – 80%.

As we see, residents of all regions of the country consider it to be a serious threat.

7.2 thousand people from the entire territory of Ukraine were surveyed (excluding those who live on the uncontrolled territory of the Donbas and the annexed Crimea). The average bias is +/- 3%.
